Katarina Witt began to ice skate when she was five. The talent she displayed soon became apparent as she enrolled into a school specifically designed for kids with a flair to play sports in Karl-Marx-Stadt. This was where she met their coach Jutta Muller. Witt was second place at the World Championships of Copenhagen in 1982. Her debut was a huge success. Her graceful style and elegance of Witt caught the eye of the world and she's been a dominant figure skater ever since. Olympic success Katarina (now Witt) was awarded the Figure Skating Gold Medal during Sarajevo in the Sarajevo Winter Games. In a tighter competition afterward, she won the gold medal. Witt actually fell short of the free skating competition, but was awarded the gold medal based on her performances in the compulsory figures and the short program. Witt became the women's first multiple winner in figure skating following Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame After enjoying success as an actress, Witt returned to the figure skating sport to take part in the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Games. She placed seventh but enchanted the crowd despite not winning an award. Witt got her induction into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1995.
